Title: Waste dump embargo threatens wetland

Conservation of the EKW (East Kolkata Wetlands) has hit a hurdle with a clause in the rules framed by the Ministry of Environment and Forests) coming in its way. Located along the eastern fringes of the city, the EKW was listed as a Ramsar site nearly a decade ago. Of late, the wetland has been plagued by threats of encroachment and efforts are being made to conserve it. Though encroachment is posing a serious threat to the wetland, it is a clause in the rules framed by MoEF for wetland conservation that has ironically come in the way of its conservation.
