India is the second largest producer of paddy in the world after China. Groundwater recharge from irrigated paddy field under various projected climate change scenarios was assessed using HYDRUS-1D model. Recharge flux, root water uptake, evaporation and surface runoff were simulated on daily time step for the growing period of paddy. Crop evapotranspiration and effective rainfall during the simulation period were estimated to be 301.9 and 269.4 mm, respectively. The present study was undertaken to evaluate the impact of climate change on recharge flux from paddy field in the Karnal district of Haryana in India where paddy is the major crop covering 42.3 % of cultivated area. Karnal district is famous for the export of Basmati rice. However, a concern is being raised on the cultivation of paddy in the district due to declining trend of groundwater levels. About 70 % of the area in the district is irrigated by groundwater. In view of changing climate and its impact on groundwater recharge and dependability of paddy cultivation on groundwater in the district, it was important to undertake a study to assess the impact of climate on groundwater recharge from irrigated paddy fields.
