Title: Algae to diesel technology
Organization:STEPS
Source:Sustainable Technologies & Environmental Projects Pvt Ltd

Algae occupy vast areas of water bodies. Algae grown in lakes spoils the waters even though algae is an excellent de-pollutant for atmospheric emissions. The Algae to Diesel technology envisages converting the sustainable biomass into fuels. This process has been developed to combat the dual menace of fuel shortage and the contamination of water bodies by algae. The importance of the technology is that the water bodies can be used as sustainable sources of fuels for the future. The greenhouse emissions if routed through the water bodies will increase the growth of algae. The high growth algae can then be used a source for generating fuel for energy.

Outcome/Benefits: In this technology, there is no mechanical and chemical solvent extraction involved. It eliminates the process of trans esterification and there is no intermediate stage of bio crude. It directly converts algae into diesel. The end product is hydrocarbon diesel not bio diesel. The STEPS diesel can be used as direct fuel and not as blended fuel.
