The Delhi government will, going forward, hire and lease only electric vehicles (EVs) for official purposes. However, purchase of petrol, diesel and CNG vehicles for bureaucrats, ministers and senior officials will continue. After its formation in August 2021 to prepare a broader policy on electric vehicles, a Delhi government committee has decided to continue with the previous scheme that allows purchase of all vehicle types. Sources said the government has not made purchase of EVs mandatory since they are costly, there is a lack of charging infrastructure, and is not mandatory under the ‘Delhi EV policy’.
