Title: Tamil Nadu: State-level body to monitor plastic waste management

The Tamil Nadu government has constituted a State Level Advisory Body to monitor the implementation of the Plastic Waste (Management and Handling) Rules, 2011. The municipal authorities would be responsible for setting up, operationalisation and coordination of the waste management system which include safe collection, storage, segregation, transportation, processing and disposal of plastic waste. It should ensure no damage was caused to the environment during the process, set up collection centres, ensure channelization to recyclers and ensure that open burning of waste was not permitted. Additional safeguards included that no carry bags should be made available free of cost to the consumers.
