According to planning commission Biodiversity should be made a significant topic in the current policy formation to achieve sustainable growth and development among the list of monitoring indicators, introduced in the 12th Five Year Plan. The use of natural resources must be in a sustainable manner and the effective use of water, land and energy are essential for the development of the country. A set of policies is needed for the sustainable use of water. Eighty per cent of the water available is being used for agriculture in the country in a highly ineffective way, while only 50 per cent need to be used.
