Shares of energy sources in total global primary energy supply in 2008

On a global basis, it is estimated that renewable energy accounted for 12.9% of the total 492 EJ of primary energy supply in 2008 (IEA, 2010a). The largest renewable energy contributor was biomass (10.2%), with the majority (roughly 60%) of the biomass fuel used in traditional cooking and heating applications in developing countries but with rapidly increasing use of modern biomass as well. Hydropower represented 2.3%, whereas other renewable energy sources accounted for 0.4%.
