Title: 10 lakh hectares lost to drought, migration

Three years of successive drought, and a fourth in the offing, has seen a serious dip in Karnataka's agricultural cultivation. Since 2000-01, the state has seen a serious fluctuation in cultivated land, which has reduced by 10 lakh hectares. The shrinking of cultivable land has seen variation in production of foodgrains and even crops grown. The agriculture department, which compiled statistics for 17 years, said this land loss is not a permanent phenomenon and that losses are primarily due to drought. So how has the state fared?
