The Ministry of Environment and Forests implemented the policies and programmes relating to conservation of the country’s natural resources including lakes and rivers, biodiversity, forests and wildlife, ensuring the welfare of animals and prevention & abatement of pollution. It serves as the nodal agency of the Govt of India for various projects and programmes relating to Environment and Forests and Wildlife supported by the Government of India and International Intergovernmental Organizations. The implementation of the plans of the Ministry is supported by legislative and regulatory measures, aimed at preservation, conservation and protection of the environment. Besides legislative measures, the ministry has evolved a number of policy measures, in particular, the National Conservation Strategy and Policy Statement on Environment and Development, National Forest Policy, Policy Statement on Abatement of Pollution and National Environmental Policy.
