Under the Solar City Programme of the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), a plan has been floated to convert Chandigarh into a model solar city. It integrates reduction of reliance on fossil fuels by the application of energy conservation and efficiency measures and replacing generation and use of conventional energy, along with renewable energy. The solar city master plan for Chandigarh has been prepared by TERI with different energy saving and renewable energy options embedded in it, along with technological options that are feasible in the long run. These include energy conservation in the residential and commercial sectors, municipal services like water pumping and street lighting, solar water heating systems, and rooftop solar energy-based electricity generation.
