The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy initiated the national programme on ‘Development of Solar Cities’ under the 11th Five Year Plan to help cities in India to reduce the use of conventional energy consumption by 10% in a span of 5 years through deployment of renewable energy and energy efficiency measures. The objective of the programme is to support Urban Local Bodies to prepare a Road Map to guide their cities in becoming a “Solar Cities” or “Renewable Energy Cities”. Kohima is one of the pioneer cities to receive financial support from the ministry for preparing a Master to develop itself as a Solar City.
