Title: Set up more effluent plants: CPCB to Haryana govt
Source:The Times of India
Date:18 January 2023

The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) has directed the Haryana government to more than double the number of common effluent treatment plants (CETPs) from 19 to 42 in the state and take action against five of the existing plants that weren’t complying with the norms. CETPs are usually installed near industrial clusters, so that all liquid waste from factories and units can be treated before it is disposed of. On average, ammoniacal nitrogen load of 277kg and nitrate load of 188.8kg is released into the Yamuna waters by Haryana daily. CPCB carried a survey of CETPs in Haryana between December 2021-March 2022. The findings of the survey were of the 19 CETPs, 18 were found to be functioning and treating almost three-fourth — 72% — of the effluent waste released from industries in Haryana. This means the remaining effluent waste is illegally released into groundwater or into Yamuna waters without being treated. Of these 18 functioning plants, 13 were found to be complying with norms and the remaining weren’t. Out of 18 working 5 CETPS were not complying with the treatment norms. Levey compensation on CETPS violating the norms.
