Title: KMDA to hire Hyd firm to turn plastic into renewable energy

Date:18 January 2023

The Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA) is engaging a Hyderabad organisation to conduct a study and come up with a report on setting up a waste-into-energy processing unit, which will burn plastic and other refuse into ashes to derive renewable energy. KMDA officials said while solid waste, like cloth, wood and tyre, were recycled for further use, the state had not yet started converting plastic into energy. Renewable energy experts said plastic, mixed with other waste, including wood, tyre and cloth, would be processed from which energy could be generated. Renewable energy expert S P Gon Chaudhuri said the waste would first be segregated in bio-degredable and non-bio-degrdable parts. The plastic will be separated and put in a machine, where it will be treated. The machine will treat the toxic matter, generated by burnt plastic, generating renewable fuel. The bio-degredable waste will go into another machine, from where the refuse will be put in a boiler at a high temperature, which will create steam, which again can operate generators to produce energy.
