To tackle pollution of water bodies, the National Green Tribunal has framed guidelines for sewage treatment plants in Chennai on the removal of septage from unsewered areas, regulation of sewage tankers under local body limits, and discharge of untreated sewage into water bodies. The guidelines are under Municipal Corporation, Municipalities and the Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Act of 1978, along with the January 2, 2023, GO. The tribunal looked into whether the infrastructural requirements matched the development of the expanding city, whether entire sewage generated each day is treated before letting into water bodies, and into the issue of private tankers continuing to dump sewage into storm water drains.
