Researchers from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru have evaluated that the wetlands of Karnataka are worth Rs 284.52 billion annually, based on the various ecosystem services they provide. According to the study, while the provisioning and regulating services provided by wetlands in the state amount to Rs 49.7 billion and Rs 196.89 billion per year, respectively, the cultural services provided by wetlands amount to Rs 37.93 billion per year. Researchers say it is crucial to quantify the wetlands’ socio-cultural, ecological, and economic value for appropriate management strategies by policymakers.
