This is an Act to provide for the enhancement of livelihood security of the households in rural areas of the country by providing at least 100 days of guaranteed wage employment in every financial year to every household whose adult members volunteer to do unskilled manual work. The focus of this rural employment guarantee scheme shall be on the following works: (i) water conservation and water harvesting; (ii) drought proofing; (iii) irrigation canals; (iv) renovation of traditional water bodies; (v) land development; (vi) flood control and protection works; (vii) rural connectivity to provide all-weather access. The works taken up under the scheme shall be in rural areas. Under this scheme the labourers will not be paid less than the wage rate. This scheme applies to adult members of every household who reside in any rural areas and are willing to do unskilled manual work.
