Under the Rajiv Gandhi Grameen Vidyutikaran Yojana (RGGVY), the Mangalore Electricity Supply Company (Mescom) will provide electricity by harnessing solar energy for 42 villages in Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Chikmagalur and Shimoga districts located amidst thick forests.The project will be funded by Rural Electrification Corporation Ltd. (RECL). It is a known fact that many villages in Malnad region, located in forested land, remain deprived of regular grid power; this is because the Forest Department has objected to clearing trees to lay power lines. Mescom plans to install photovoltaic plants in such villages under the yojana and provide electricity through decentralised distributed generation.
