The Kerala state has given approval to 11 Special Economic Zones (SEZs). The Kerala government has made 12 clarifications under this policy. Some of these are: (1) Because of the density of population in the state approval of SEZ would be granted only to those SEZs which take into account the special situation of the State; (2) Conversion of paddy fields for SEZ projects will not be permitted; (3) If SEZ status is needed for industrial parks they may apply for it; but for establishment of SEZ land will not be acquired and made available to private entrepreneurs; (4) Entrepreneurs in the SEZ will not be exempted from electricity duty; (5) 70% of the land provided for SEZ units should be utilized for industrial purposes and 30% for allied activities; (6) The industrial enterprises in the SEZs alone are exempted from tax collected under KGST Act for a period of 10 years from the date it starts functioning.
