Title: Kerala Green Building Policy (Draft)
Organization:Government of Kerala
Date:September 2013

The construction sector contributes a major share to Kerala's economy. But this uncontrolled growth posses grave challenges for the state and the environment. Large quantities of natural resources like forest, soil cover, water and energy are extensively used in building industry. Building operations and inhabitant activities generate huge quantity of waste and directly contribute to almost 50% of the air and water pollution. Kerala being an environmentally sensitive geographic region with resource deficiency formulated the Green Building Policy (Draft) to provide guidelines for the various organizations in the building sector. The policy mentions strategies aimed to (i) construct self-sustainable buildings which consume minimum energy, water and other resources; (ii) popularize and implement Green Building concepts; (iii) implement energy conservation codes; (iv) minimize the demand on non-renewable sources; maximize re-use, recycling etc.

Some of the immediate objectives for the implementation of green building policy are given below.
(i) Green building techniques shall be implemented in buildings, grouped under different categories based on plinth area; (ii) the policy will cover both the existing and new buildings; (iii) conserve the natural resources, reducing the soil waste or zero discharge of waste, improved air and water quality.

The policy suggests that ratings from GRIHA/LEED should be attempted to ensure that the processes are complaint with the standard practices.

A Green Building Guidance team would be constituted to give guidance in design and construction of buildings.
