This notification imposes prohibitions on the manufacture, sale, distribution, stocking, transportation and use of virgin and recycled plastic carry bags and recycled plastic containers with effect from 20 August 2013. The prohibitions are: (i) articles such as plates, cups, tumblers, spoons, forks, etc. made of virgin or recycled plastic should not be used/sold for any purpose; (ii) containers made of recycled plastic should not be used for foodstuff; (iii) containers made of virgin plastic should be in natural shade or white; (iv) containers made of recycled plastic and used for any purpose except in foodstuff shall be manufactured using pigments and colorants as per Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) specifications; 1981; (v) recycling of plastic except carry bags shall be undertaken strictly in accordance with the BIS specifications; (vi) manufacturers of recycled plastic containers shall code/mark containers as per BIS guidelines.
