The Planning Commission is firming up a proposal for setting up a Cabinet committee on transport, a move that could lead to speedy decision making in the sector. The proposed committee will be on the lines of Cabinet Committee on Investments (CCI) that was established in 2013. The proposal is partly based on the recommendations of the National Transport Development Policy Committee, chaired by Mr Rakesh Mohan, which had suggested setting up of a unified transport ministry with a clear mandate to deliver a multimodal transport system.
