Title: Bangalore third in e-waste generation in country

About 57,000 metric tonnes (MT) of electronic waste is being produced in Bangalore annually making it the third-highest city producing e-waste in the country. Nearly 12.5 lakh MT of electronic waste is generated in the country each year of which 96,000 MT is generated in Mumbai, followed by Delhi-NCR (67,000 MT) and Bangalore (57,000 MT), says a study released by ASSOCHAM (The Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India). According to the study released on the eve of World Earth Day, children are often employed by the informal recycling industry to dismantle e-waste in yards or workshops without proper protection or safeguards. The report states that about 4.5 lakh child laborers aged between 10 and 14 years are involved in the recycling of e-waste in the country. Apart from advocating the legislation to prevent children in the labour market, ASSOCHAM has also stressed on bringing out “effective legislation to prevent entry of child labour into the collection, segregation and distribution of waste” in the report.
