Title: NGT directive a bitter pill for sugar mills discharging effluents into Ganga

The principal bench of the National Green Tribunal (NGT) has issued directive ordering several corrective and preventive measures to reduce pollution of the river Ganga by the Simbhaoli Sugar Mill and Distillery located in Hapur, a manufacturing hub in western Uttar Pradesh, formerly part of Ghaziabad. In an interim order based on an application filed by environmentalist Krishan Kant Singh and the NGO Social Action for Forest and Environment (SAFE) against pollution by Simbhaoli Sugar Mill and Distillery and Gopalji Dairy into Simbhaoli Drain, the principal bench of the National Green Tribunal headed by Justice Swatanter Kumar gave orders regarding operating the various plants at Simbhaoli Sugar Mill and Distillery so that the performance standards in relation to environmental norms are complied with.
