After a fortnight of agitation by drivers of battery-powered rickshaws, the Union transport ministry allowed these vehicles to ply on the city roads, overturning an earlier ban. The ministry also exempted the e-rickshaws from prosecution under the Motor Vehicles Act. The decision is expected to benefit over 1.5 lakh e-rickshaw operators in the national capital whose fate was hanging in the balance in absence of a policy for these vehicles. City’s three municipal corporations are also planning a unified policy under which each e-rickshaw driver would be provided with a mobile phone for connectivity. According to the new policy, the e-rickshaws can no longer be prosecuted for traffic violations. Instead, a detailed policy will be framed for regulation of the battery-operated rickshaws to ensure that they do not cause chaos on roads.
