Date:12 January 2023

Around 170 million of gallons per day (MGD) of untreated waste water go into Yamuna River, according to a latest report by Delhi Pollution Control Committee on the progress in the river’s rejuvenation. The report stated that estimated sewage generation in Delhi is around 768 MGD. However, installed treatment capacity is 632 MGD while utilisation capacity is 597 MGD, making a gap of 171 MGD or 22.3%. To fill this gap, the report claimed that the total capacity would be increased to 925.5 MGD by December this year. Out of the 18 major drains that fall in the Yamuna, five drains are yet to be tapped, the report revealed. Mori Gate drain, which releases around 9.5 MGD, will be intercepted and treated in Coronation Pillar STP. The report said tenders are in process of approval and the deadline has been fixed as August this year. Maharani Bagh drain, which discharges around 6.6 MGD, will be intercepted and treated in Okhla STP by June 2023. Sonia Vihar drain (7 MGD) and Delhi Gate drain (10 MGD) have a deadline of April and December, respectively, this year. The completion date of Delhi Gate drain is subject to the availability of land. Recently, National Green Tribunal observed that there is still a huge gap in generation of sewage and available treatment facilities. All drains in which untreated sewage is being discharged are not intercepted and diverted so that the untreated sewage is not conveyed to the river, said the tribunal.
