The architecture and planning department's climatology lab led by its professor Rajashree Kotharkar at Visvesvaraya National Institute Of Technology (VNIT) has prepared a draft model heat action plan (mHAP) for different Indian cities for the prevention and management of calamities that may occur due to rising temperatures. The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) awarded a research project titled, 'Developing framework for heat vulnerability mapping and model heat action plan for Indian cities' to VNIT with professor Kotharkar as the principal investigator in 2020. The mHAP was presented during two recent workshops at Nagpur and IIT-Bombay for deliberation by experts from across the region and the country. The mHAP includes a framework for authorities at city level to manage and plan for extreme heat countermeasures through effective coordination among concerned agencies.
