India, on an average, cultivates rice on 43 million ha of land. The annual amount of CH4 emitted from a given area of rice is a function of the crop duration, water regimes, and organic soil amendments. The total methane emission from Indian rice-ecosystems for the year 2005-06 estimated was 3.386 Tg.
